I would define leadership as leading a group of individuals to better themselves and better the lives of others. I would define positive change as leading a group of people to implement good things in their community and for themselves. Change can make some people uneasy, but sometimes it is for the better. I always want myself, my managers, and my other team members to lead with positive change.
Power vs privilege is a big thing when it comes to leadership. I have experienced some leaders who let the power of their position get to their head and those people make that job very miserable. I once had a manager who did not lead with positive change. He wanted us to meet our credit card application goal because we were getting behind. Instead of trying to encourage his employees to do better and implement an incentive, he threatened to write people up or fire them for not meeting the goal. He let the power of being able to decide the fate of someone's job get to his head rather than care for his employees, find out what their reason is for not meeting the goal, and implement a strategy to fix the issue. If it were me, I would sit down one on one with my employees and find out what the issue is and what I can do to help them succeed.
Another thing is adaptive leadership. If I do not anchor myself and separate work from my free time I will not be able to lead as effectively. I would be so worn out and overextend myself if I do not draw a line. I was a section leader for my band and I had a hard time separating my free time from my leadership role. This lack of separation caused me to be stressed out and not lead as effectively as I would have liked to.
Challenging the process is also important to leading positive change. Leaders should be criticizing new ideas or pointing out problems that need to be solved. One time at work I noticed two coworkers disagreeing with each other and getting into an argument. I challenged them to sit down with each other and talk about what their issues were and come up with a way to resolve it. To this day they are now great friends because I stepped in to help challenge them!
